Kaohsiung Museum of Fine Arts and the Fish Market

On Saturday morning, I called my family. When my host siblings finished their morning classes, we went to a restaurant for lunch. I had dumplings! Then we picked up Katie (a fellow NSLI-Y student). Her host sister was busy at an all day event at her high school so Katie spent the day with us!

First we went to the Kaohsiung Museum of Fine Arts. The museum was very neat! We spent a lot of time in the modern art exhibit. It was interesting to see the Taiwanese take on modern art though I can't say I understood many of the pieces. Modern art continues to puzzle me! After the modern art exhibit, we stopped in on a lecture about music. I didn't follow most of it because the professor was providing an in-depth analyzation of a rondo by Mendelssohn so the vocabulary used was quite nuanced. Next, went to a calligraphy exhibit and visited the children's art building.

After the museum, we went to the swimming pool as we do most Saturdays. I helped my sister work on her breast stroke, swam a few laps and then spent a long time sitting in the hot tub and cold tub.

We then went out for fried rice. Fried rice is one of my favorite foods here! After eating dinner, we came back to my house where we played card games and ate ice cream and fruit. We all took turns picking song to play out loud and I have to say the mix of Taiwanese, Spanish and American music we had going made for a killer playlist!

After driving Katie back home, I spent some time working on my homework. Then I went to bed.

On Sunday morning, I went to Mass at St. Dominic's. After Mass, I met the priest who is actually a Dominican from Korea. I had tea in the Dominican residence next door with three other parishioners, including the organist. They were incredibly friendly!

My host family and I went out for lunch at a restaurant famous for its fried chicken. The chicken was absolutely delicious! The breading was crispy, peppery and a bit sweet. I certainly do like the Taiwanese take on fried chicken! Then we went to a fish market. The market was right on the harbor. There were many booths set up where you could buy fish. We bought about a month's worth of fish, some squid and dried kiwi.

After the market, we came home and I worked on homework for the rest of the afternoon. For dinner, we ate some of the fish we had bought at the market. We also had pomelo, a fruit I had never before eaten! It is kind of like a grapefruit except less sour, a bit more bland and less juicy. It was very good!

After dinner, we watched some tennis as well as another episode of Running Man. Running Man is a Korean reality-variety show where cast members compete against each other in various games. We frequently watch this show during and after dinner. Here is an episode with English subtitles:

I headed to bed early because I've got another full week ahead!
