Week Six Top Five

1. Taiwanese barbecue is delicious I had Taiwanese barbecue for the first time this afternoon. It was very different from American barbecue simply because we cooked different types of meat and vegetables but still very good!

2. Garbage trucks here are super cool I’ve actually known about the garbage trucks since I got here, but I haven’t had a chance to add it to my top five list. The garbage trucks are all yellow and all play ice cream truck type music. Their stops are scheduled for a specific time of the week. When people hear the music, they know to bring their trash out to the truck.

3. The science museum in Kaohsiung is awesome I had the chance to visit the National Museum of Science and Technology in Kaohsiung this Friday. The museum was amazing! The exhibits were interesting and interactive. The museum admission was also very reasonable. I hope to have a chance to go back!

4. Engaging my mind in non-Chinese activities helps me stay focused It goes without saying that I’ve been studying a lot of Chinese these past six weeks. Recently, I’ve tried to integrate some non-Chinese focused learning into my schedule by doing thing like reading a bit of an English book before bed or exploring my interest in C.S. Lewis by listening to lectures about him. These activities take up very little time but help keep me refreshed and allow my mind to be simultaneously active but also taking a break from studying Chinese.

5. Going on adventures on my own is a lot of fun This weekend was the first time I really ventured out by myself. I finally felt comfortable enough with my Chinese and my ability to navigate the city to head out by myself without a clear plan of where I wanted to go. I really enjoyed spending time exploring the city and hope to do this again some time soon!
