Trip to 溪頭

This weekend, we went on our first culture trip outside of Kaohsiung! We traveled to 溪頭 (Nantou), the county that is practically in the middle of Taiwan.

We left right after morning classes on Friday. It took us a little over two hours to get there. We stayed at 溪頭怪物村, or Nantou Monster village. Friday evening, we took a tour of the village, ate at an all-you-can-eat buffet and did a scavenger hunt.

All five girls shared a hotel room. Lina brought the supplies for s‘mores so we used the hot water kettle to cook them!

In the morning, I woke up early to go on a run with Alisa and Scotty. Then, we ate breakfast. We next went hiking for a few hours. The forest was absolutely beautiful!

We drove to 日月潭, or Sun Moon Lake. We ate street food for lunch. Then, we took a ferry across part of the lake.

We then drove to a temple. Part of this temple was destroyed in a large earthquake.

After visiting the temple, we drove back to Kaohsiung. My host family took me out to a restaurant for dinner.

I went to Mass with Scotty at St. Dominic’s on Sunday morning. The Mass was said in Taiwanese so I didn’t know the responses but was still able to follow along. After Mass, I came home and watched the ND USC game on my laptop. I was so happy to finally be able to watch a football game! It’s hard to believe that it’s almost the end of October and this is the first game I watched. I’m happy to report that Notre Dame won, and by a lot!

For lunch, we went to a restaurant near my house. At this restaurant, they give you a metal hot plate with your food on it to keep it warm as you eat it. I had beef, chicken and noodles. You can also self-serve yourself as much caramel corn as you want!

In the afternoon, I went back to the Japanese military fort with my host mom, brother and sister. There, they helped me take video for my blog. In the evening, we ate dinner and I worked on homework. It was certainly a memorable weekend!
