感恩節快樂!

Happy Thanksgiving from Taiwan! On Wednesday, we went to the house of the AIT branch chief for a lunch to celebrate. AIT stands for the American Institute in Taiwan. For political reasons, the USA cannot have an embassy in Taiwan so they have AIT instead. The lunch was very good! It was very nice to have some classic American food.

On Friday after class, I went to the award ceremony for an English speech competition my host sister had entered. She received seventh place! After the ceremony, we left for Tainan. Once we arrived, we first ate dinner. I had an egg and rice burrito as well as some delicious clams. We then went to the night market. I tried some fried mushrooms which I didn’t like too much and also played a carnival game which was enjoyable.

After the night market, we went to the hotel. Our hotel room was huge! We also had our own personal outdoor swimming pool. That evening, I played board games with my host siblings.

In the morning, we ate breakfast at the hotel restaurant. Then, we watched a bit of the Voice back at the hotel. After swimming in the pool, we packed up and left.

The Hotel

We first went to a famous bakery called Aqua Blue. They sell cakes made out of layers upon layers of incredibly thin bread. The pieces we got had 37 layers each! The cake was delicious.

Next, we stopped at a store to buy some spicy crackers. The store was decorated for Christmas!

After the store, we went to the Tainan History Museum. This is the most famous history museum in Taiwan. I had been there last week but had not had time to see most of the museum. First, we did a activity where you sit on a train and, as you look out the windows, you see what Taiwan would have looked like in the past. Then, we saw an exhibit on aboriginal culture in Taiwan. Next, we walked through the museum’s largest exhibit which provides an overview of Taiwan’s history.

After visiting the museum, we drove back to Kaohsiung. I went to Mass that evening. We have final exams for our Chinese classes next week so I am currently taking a quick break from studying to write this post!
