Finishing Up Month Three

This Monday, I had a chance to meet with Sr. Fidelis. She is the head of the group of Ursuline Sisters that lives on campus. She gave me a copy of the New Testament with both Chinese and English. I am excited to use the book! In the evening, I volunteered at the tutoring center.

On Tuesday, I volunteered in the Campus Ministry Office. I was able to successfully understand and carry out instructions to go to a store off campus and pick up a large order of posters detailing upcoming Christmas activities.

After volunteering, Katie and I had Study of Chinese Characters. This was the first class our teacher didn’t have a pre-prepared power point so Katie and I read the class text book. While this was certainly a challenge, we were able to figure out what was going on with heavy help from the internet! I understood more of the class than I ever had in the past and Katie even surprised the teacher by answering one of his questions!

On Wednesday, I decided on a general idea for my midterm topic. I am going to be interviewing people to come to a better understanding of Taiwanese culture surrounding people entirely devoting their lives to religion (ie becoming a priest, sister, monk). I am very excited to begin working on this project!

On Thursday, I took my speaking final for my Chinese class. In the afternoon, Scotty and I introduced our favorite American musicals to our drama class. I then went to the afternoon market where I bought some of my favorite crackers and some Christmas gifts. On Friday, I took my listening and reading finals. I thought the tests went well and I was excited to see that I had improved.

After the tests, Alisa, Katie, Scotty and I went to see the movie Wonder with our morning teacher, Hueyin. Before the movie, we went to a very famous steamed soup dumpling place. The food was delicious!I enjoyed the movie very much, it was really moving!

In the evening, I went to an end-of-the-season banquet for my host brother’s tennis team.

On Saturday morning, I had a chance to talk to my family. Then, I studied. I am absolutely swamped with school work currently! However, my host dad made this blue tea using a special kind of flower. It certainly made the studying a bit more bearable!

Cool Blue Tea

In the evening, my host family took me to an outdoor play at a local grade school. The play was a mix of Peter Pan, Avengers, Justice League, Alice in Wonderland, and a traditional Taiwanese story. I enjoyed it very much!

The Play

On Sunday morning, I went to mass at St. Dominic’s. Because the city busses are free for the next free months in an effort to combat pollution, I took the bus instead of the MRT. To my surprise, it was faster!

After Mass, I worked on homework for a little bit. Then, my host family and I went shopping for advent wreath supplies. We found candles (and a bonus poinsettia) at IKEA and a wreath and colored ribbons at a stationary store. My host sister and I then assembled the wreath. We are going to light it each day during dinner. I am so blessed to have this chance to share how my family prepares for Christmas with my host family.

My Advent Wreath

Currently, I am taking a break from preparing for my large test on Wednesday. This week is full of really exciting cultural activities because the Chinese language center at Wenzao is on break for a week! I am very much looking forward to it!
